Product Introduction

I. HIH6000 Series Digital Humidity/Temperature Sensor Product Description

The HIH6000 series digital humidity/temperature sensors: The HIH6130/6131 series are digital output relative humidity (RH) and temperature sensors combined in the same package.

These sensors have several competitive advantages:

  • Long-term stability

  • Total error band

  • Reliability

  • Total cost solution

  • True effective temperature-compensated digital SPI output

  • Energy saving

  • Ultra-small package

Long-term stability (1.2% RH for over 5 years)
Similar humidity sensors require a 12-hour rehydration process at 75% RH (which must be done in a special equipment chamber) to correct reflow temperature drift. Honeywell sensors also experience temperature drift after reflow, but they only require a 5-hour rehydration process at room temperature (>50% RH). Honeywell's long-term stability provides customers with the following advantages:

  • Greatly reduces performance issues

  • No need for sensor maintenance or replacement during the service life, helping to extend system uptime

  • Eliminates the need for periodic sensor calibration in applications, reducing workload and cost

Total Error Band (TEB) (±5% RH)
Honeywell specifies the total error band to achieve comprehensive, meaningful measurement, providing ±5% RH actual sensor accuracy over the compensated range of 5°C to 50°C [41°F to 122°F], with a total error band of 10% RH to 90% RH, where all errors originate from:

  • Humidity nonlinearity

  • Humidity hysteresis

  • Humidity non-repeatability

  • Zero-point thermal effects

  • Slope thermal effects

  • Hysteresis thermal effects

Reliability
The new Honeywell HIH6130/6131 series sensors use laser-trimmed, thermoset polymer capacitive sensing elements. The multi-layer construction of the element resists most application hazards such as condensation, dirt, dust, oil, and common environmental chemicals, helping to provide stability and reliability.

Lowest total cost solution
Due to the sensor's total error band and its combined humidity/temperature sensor design, it provides customers with a low total cost solution.

True effective temperature-compensated digital SPI output
This allows customers to remove signal conditioning components from the printed circuit board, freeing up board space and reducing costs associated with these components (e.g., procurement, inventory, assembly). It typically avoids problems caused by multiple signal conditioning components on the PCB. It simplifies integration with microprocessors, eliminating the need for customers to perform complex signal conditioning.

Energy saving

  • Low supply voltage:Can operate at DC voltages as low as 2.3 V, enabling use in low-power and wireless-compatible applications, improving energy efficiency and extending system battery life.

  • Low power consumption:When not measuring in the application, the sensor enters sleep mode, drawing only 1 µA in battery-powered systems. When fully operational, it draws 650 µA. Sleep mode helps maximize battery life, reduce power supply size, and lower overall application weight.

Ultra-small package
The SOIC-8 SMD (surface mount sensor) package is an ultra-small package form, including a condensation-resistant version with a built-in hydrophobic filter. It offers flexibility in applications, occupies less space on the PCB, and typically simplifies layout in crowded PCBs or small devices.

Combined humidity and temperature sensor
Humidity and temperature sensors are in the same package. This allows relative humidity measurement to be temperature-compensated and provides a second independent temperature sensor output. This allows users to purchase only one sensor instead of two.

Tape and reel packaging
Cost-effective tape and reel packaging is available for high-volume, automated pick-and-place manufacturing, eliminating lead misalignment on the PCB and helping customers reduce production costs.

High resolution
The humidity sensor used in the application provides high resolution of 14 bits, and the temperature sensor also provides 14-bit resolution, helping users' systems detect very small changes in relative humidity or temperature.
