Product Introduction

I.BME680 Environmental Sensor Integrated Gas Sensor Air Quality Sensor Description:
The BME680 is an integrated environmental sensor developed for mobile applications and wearable devices where size and low power consumption are key requirements. Expanding Bosch Sensortec's existing environmental sensor series,

the BME680 integrates independent high-linearity and high-precision sensors for gas, pressure, humidity, and temperature.

It consists of an 8-pin metal lid 3.0 x 3.0 x 0.95 mm3 LGA package, designed for optimized consumption based on specific operating modes, long-term stability, and high EMC robustness.

The gas sensor within the BME680 can detect a wide range of gases to measure indoor air quality for personal well-being. Gases detectable by the BME680 include volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from paints (such as formaldehyde), spray paints, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, furniture, office equipment, glues, adhesives, and alcohol.

The humidity sensor has optimal response time, supporting performance requirements for emerging applications such as context awareness, as well as high accuracy over a wide temperature range.

The pressure sensor is an absolute barometric pressure sensor with extremely high accuracy and resolution at very low noise.

The integrated temperature sensor has been optimized for low noise and high resolution. It is primarily used for temperature compensation of the gas, pressure, and humidity sensors, and can also be used to estimate ambient temperature.

The BME680 supports a complete set of operating modes, providing great flexibility in optimizing power consumption, resolution, and filtering performance of the device.

Emerging applications such as home automation, indoor navigation, personalized weather stations, and innovative sports and fitness tools require a gas sensor with fast response time, a pressure sensor with high relative accuracy and low TCO, combined with fast response, high accuracy, relative humidity, and ambient temperature measurement. The BME680 is suitable for such barometer applications with excellent relative accuracy of ±0.12 hPa (equivalent to ±1 meter altitude difference) and a temperature coefficient of offset (TCO) of only 1.5 Pa/K (equivalent to 12.6 cm/K).

II.BME680Environmental Sensor Integrated Gas Sensor Air Quality Sensor Applications:
Indoor Air Quality Measurement
Personalized Weather Stations
Context Awareness, such as Skin Moisture Detection, Space Change Detection
Health Monitoring / Wellness
Warnings regarding dry or high temperatures
Volume and airflow measurement
Home automation control (e.g., air conditioning)
GPS enhancement (e.g., time-to-first-fix improvement, dead reckoning, slope detection)
Indoor navigation (floor change detection, elevator detection)
Altitude tracking and calories burned during physical activity

III.BME680Environmental Sensor Integrated Gas Sensor Air Quality Sensor Sensor Operation:
The BME680 supports I2C and SPI (3-wire/4-wire) digital serial interfaces.
The sensor can operate in three power modes: sleep mode, normal mode, and forced mode.
In normal mode, the sensor automatically cycles between measurement and standby periods. This mode is recommended when using the built-in IIR filter of the BME680, when short-term disturbances (e.g., blowing into the sensor) need to be filtered.
In forced mode, the sensor performs a single measurement on request and then returns to sleep mode. This mode is suitable for applications requiring low sampling rates or host-based synchronization.
To adapt to user requirements, data rate, noise, response time, and current consumption can be adjusted; multiple sampling modes, filter modes, and data rates can be selected. By applying several short-term disturbance filter settings, the sensor can be programmed in a very flexible way to meet application and power management requirements.
To simplify the design phase, default settings for several example applications are provided, such as weather monitoring, elevator/stairs detection, drop detection, or indoor navigation.

IV.BME680Environmental Sensor Integrated Gas Sensor Air Quality Sensor Software:
The BME680 is fully calibrated for all sensor components. For pressure calculation, Bosch Sensortec's altitude content.
Provider ACP2.0 software as a software package for the BME680. It calculates altitude with good accuracy. The ACP2.0 software uses sea level pressure to calculate altitude, compensates for the non-sphericity of the Earth through geoid correction, and compares its altitude with the current altitude provided by a GPS module.

V.BME680 Environmental Sensor Integrated Gas Sensor Air Quality Sensor System Compatibility:
The BME680 is designed to fit into modern mobile consumer electronic devices. In addition to small footprint and low power consumption, the BME680 provides a wide range of supply voltages for VDD and VDDIO.
Bosch Sensortec's BME680 combines extensive experience and reliability for consumer applications.
